The Argument for ER Collets?
|
ER collets, while they are designed for tool holding, also work great for work holding in small lathes. They also have many inherent benefits of other solutions. If you're considering a set of collets for your mini lathe, we highly recommend a set of ER Collets.
High Precision and Concentricity: Designed to minimize runout, ER collets provide high concentricity, ensuring that workpiece or tools are held securely and accurately.
Reliable Performance: ER collets provide consistent and repeatable accuracy. Their design ensures even distribution of clamping forces, reducing slippage and vibrations during machining.
Wide range of clamping: ER collets can accommodate a variety of workpiece or tool diameters. Fewer collets are needed to cover a broad range of tools, reducing cost and simplifying tool changes.
Self-Release Feature: When the collet nut is loosened, the collet automatically disengages from the tool, preventing sticking or damage and making for quicker and easier tool changes
See ER Collet Sizes for specs on ALL collet sizes.
Combined with a Collet Block (this week's special!) they also make a great tool on a mill, grinder or drill press...

ER-32 Collet Block Set (Hex/Square)
|
A collet block is a precision workholding device designed to securely grip and position cylindrical or hexagonal workpieces. Unlike traditional vises that clamp with flat jaws, collet blocks utilize a collet – a slotted sleeve with a tapered outer surface – that collapses uniformly around the workpiece when tightened. This provides a concentric and consistent grip, minimizing the risk of distortion or damage, particularly when working with delicate or
thin-walled materials.
ER-32 collets have a range of 1/16" to 13/16" (2 mm to 20 mm)
This SQUARE collet block provides easy indexing for 2 and 4 divisions. The collet block is 1.57" square, and the body is 2.8" long.
This HEXAGONAL collet block provides easy indexing for 3 and 6 divisions. The collet block is 1.75" across the flats and the body is 2.8" long.
The collet block itself is typically a hardened steel block, often square or hexagonal, with a precision-machined bore to accommodate the collet. The combination of the precision collet and the stable block creates a rigid and accurate platform for a wide range of machining operations.
Type 'C' spanner wrench for slotted Type B and Type T2 ER-32 collet nuts (45-52 mm). The wrench has a coated soft grip handle for a secure hold. The overall length is 220 mm.

Chris' Tips:
Collet blocks are commonly used on milling machines to hold round or hexagonal stock for machining flats, slots, or other features. The secure grip and precise positioning enable accurate and repeatable milling operations such as drilling and tapping operations, ensuring that holes are accurately positioned and perpendicular to the workpiece surface. Square Collet Blocks: These are the most common type, offering four sides that can be used for mounting or referencing.
Hexagonal Collet Blocks: Offering six sides, these blocks provide more flexibility in positioning the workpiece at different angles. They are particularly useful for milling multiple features on a single part without re-fixturing.
